Church History

Little is know of the beginnings of the church. Rev. David Carter organized a Methodist society as early as 1836 near New Salem Township. The Illinois Conference appointed Rev. Chaffee as their first pastor in 1861 when the Pennington Point Circuit was formed. Churches on the circuit included Industry, Pleasant Grove, Adair and Center Point.

The first church building was built in 1856 and razed later for their second building in 1876, later damaged by a tornado. This building was repaired and moved to another site and used until the church burned down in 1943. The congregation bought the Bethel Free Methodist building and moved to Pennington Point. The church closed in 1968.
