Scope and Contents

The Admin Board minutes (1945-1990) reveal the ministry of the church, activities and financial data; conference reports are interfiled in the minutes. There are minutes of the UMW/WSCS (1940-1979, incomplete). There are scant minutes from the MYF (1961-1965). Four membership registers include marriage and baptismal information also. One folder has membership lists and baptisms information. Three guest books were kept in the collection. There are three folders relating to the church property and bequests to the church. One folder of closure documents also includes correspondence. A WSCS scrapbook (1940-1945) document their ministry during this timeframe.

Church History

Early records for the church begin with the contract for a church buildng in 1868, although the society may have begun as early as 1862. The church was part of the Twelve Mile Grove Circuit until the Deselm Circuit was created in 1878. At that time the church was part of the Rock River Conference. The circuit had Manteno, Wilton Center, Twelve Mile Grove and Ritchey. By 1891, Deselm was part of the Central Illinois Conference on a charge with Ritchey.

The women had four circles beginning in the early 1900s, many of them working on different projects to provide financial help for the church. Later on they did canning of tomatoes and applesauce to provide funds for the Baby Fold. The men and youth also had organizations at one time.

Because of declining membership and lack of young people in the area to carry on the ministry of the church, the members voted to close in 1990.
